Credit Unions, Leagues Come Together to Celebrate 90th Anniversary of Federal Credit Union Act

6/24/2024

In the 90 years since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act of 1934, credit unions have made a significant impact on the financial services sector and their communities. This year, credit unions and their state advocacy organizations are coming together to celebrate this milestone throughout 2024.

The Federal Credit Union Act laid the groundwork for an unparalleled era of financial empowerment. It enabled credit unions to be organized under charters approved by the federal government. While the landscape of consumer transactions has evolved with the advent of ATMs and mobile technology, the enduring essence of credit unions – their unique structure, unwavering mission, and steadfast philosophy – has steadfastly endured, anchoring them as pillars of stability within the financial domain.

This year, the credit union leagues and associations, brought together by AACUL, are collectively promoting the great work of credit unions beginning in April with National Credit Union Youth Month. Additional notable celebrations include Elder Abuse Prevention Month (June), I Love My Credit Union Day (July 26), and International Credit Union Day (October 17).

AACUL brings together credit union advocates and leverages the collective power of Leagues to create advocacy wins for credit unions and build a strong network of credit union associations.

“The league structure stands as a reflection of credit unions through embracing a member-centric spirit and fostering collaborative endeavors, the Leagues secure advocacy wins and nurture a robust network of peer support,” said AACUL President Brad Miller. “This year-long celebration of the Federal Credit Union Act is a phenomenal example of the ways the Leagues embody and reflect the cooperative principles established and fulfilled by credit unions.”

The cooperative celebration efforts are championed by League communicators around the nation. Throughout the year, these anniversary efforts will continue to provide advocacy support to spread the credit union difference to those both familiar and unfamiliar with the movement.
