CUs, League Meet With Rep. Wittman; Congressman Supports CUs on Biz Lending Measure for Vets, Interchange Bill

Advocates from Henrico Federal Credit Union, Langley Federal Credit Union, Virginia Credit Union and your League met with Congressman Rob Wittman (R-1st) yesterday and his District Director Joe Schumacher at Henrico FCU’s headquarters. The newly drawn 1^st Congressional District now includes parts of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico as well as Williamsburg, the Middle Peninsula, and the Northern Neck.

Congressman Wittman toured the branch and learned of Henrico FCU’s long history serving its members and the Greater Richmond Community.  During the meeting, advocates discussed two pieces of federal legislation important to Virginia’s 103 member-owned credit unions. Rep. Wittman stated his support of the Veterans Member Business Loan Act (H.R. 4867). Advocates in the meeting also discussed their grave concerns regarding the Credit Card Competition Act (H.R. 3881). Rep. Wittman reiterated his firm opposition to the Credit Card Card Competition Act, which threatens to upend credit card usage in the U.S. and financial institutions' ability to identify, prevent and address card fraud.

Also discussed during the meeting was the ever-increasing regulatory burdens credit unions face and the adverse impact one-size-fits-all regulation has on credit union members and their access to affordable credit.  The advocates in the meeting also took time to highlight the “Credit Union Difference” -- showcasing the work they do for veterans and their communities, including their financial education efforts which are reaching members all across the Commonwealth.

During the meeting, Congressman Wittman stated his continued support of credit unions and commented that he has been a credit union member for more than 40 years.
