Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: The Emerging Professionals Network

The Virginia Credit Union League’s Emerging Professionals Network (EPN) is a dynamic initiative aimed at fostering the growth and development of young professionals within the credit union industry. EPN serves as a critical resource for individuals who are early in their careers or new to the credit union system, offering them opportunities to network, gain leadership skills, and advance professionally through structured programs like the EMERGE Leadership Certification.

What EPN Offers

EPN provides its members with access to a range of networking events, workshops, and seminars designed to enhance their professional skills and connect them with like-minded peers and mentors in the industry. These opportunities are tailored to help young professionals navigate their career paths effectively and make impactful contributions to their organizations and communities.

Personal and Professional Growth through EPN

Cedric Claude from Virginia Credit Union recounts his beneficial experiences with EPN, starting from his very first networking event.

"I was quite nervous to go, since I was new to not only my company, but also the EPN. Once I got there I met some amazing people who I am still close to till this day. It gave me peace of mind knowing that there were other like minded individuals from different credit unions that I could relate to and engage with.”

As a current board member in the Richmond region, Cedric now contributes by organizing similar events that foster growth for new members.

Career Enhancement via EPN

Katie Bailey, now working as Director of Membership and Business Development with the League, found EPN instrumental in her career journey. 

“When I started as a teller at Henrico FCU, it was meant to be a temporary role while I figured out my career path. However, I soon realized that Henrico and the credit union industry offered significant professional opportunities. I discovered the Emerging Professionals Network while working in marketing at Henrico and decided to give it a try. Now, I work for the League, and I get to meet new amazing Emerging Professionals all the time!”

Benefits of Structured Learning

Juan Sanmartin of Henrico FCU appreciates the structured learning opportunities provided by EPN, such as the EMERGE Certification.

 “I am very grateful for the EMERGE Certification program and the Virginia Credit Union League for creating it. I learned so much in each one of the sessions. It taught me some things about my leadership style that I had never noticed. The program goes over the ins and outs of the credit union industry and why credit unions really are different from banks. It is always good to be reminded that what we do matters in such a big way! It also helped me connect with emerging professionals from all over the state – not just my region.”

Advice for New Members

Jason D’Silva of Apple FCU says, “I think the obvious answer here is to network as much as you can. That is one of the purposes of the EPN but it is really so helpful and almost comforting to learn that there are others out there who are in the exact same situation you may be in. Talking with them and learning from them is much easier than trying to figure everything out on your own.”

The Future of EPN

Looking ahead, EPN plans to expand its offerings to ensure it continues to meet the evolving needs of its members and the industry.

"I see EPN growing as a platform for emerging professionals, with a focus on technology, leadership development, and community outreach. I'm excited about fostering cross-collaboration among credit unions to strengthen the overall movement. Knowing many myself, younger professionals have no idea the opportunities this industry holds for us! With the right amount of outreach, we can help them realize their potential,” said Katie.
