Langley Federal Credit Union has donated $125,000 to establish a demand scholarship fund at Norfolk State University to help students finance their college education.

Langley presented a check in the presence of NSU President Javaune Adams-Gaston after the senior night ceremonies for the women’s basketball team and cheerleaders on March 8, signifying a five-year commitment.

“Langley believes that a college education is an important step to changing your life and reaching your potential, and we want to help everyone achieve that goal if that is their desire,” Langley Chief Human Resources Officer Jerome Fowlkes said. “We are a part of the community, and that means we want to invest in the community in any way that we can.”

Last year, Langley and its foundation donated $1.7 million to over 170 nonprofit organizations in the communities Langley serves. “It’s just a part of our DNA,” said Fowlkes. “We give back.”

Langley chose to support Norfolk State because “there is something special about NSU and the Green and Gold,” said Fowlkes, a Virginia Tech graduate. “There is a feeling of belonging that exists there that I haven’t found at any institution that I attended. Everyone in my group that toured Norfolk State felt it. It’s a special place.”

Langley is working with the NSU alumni association on other ideas to continue its partnership and help support NSU students. “Stay tuned,” Fowlkes said. “There’s more to come.”

Langley Federal Credit Union has a long history of community involvement and charitable giving dating back to the founding of the credit union in the 1930s.
