League Urging Lawmakers to Address Looming Partial Shutdown of Federal Government

1/16/2024

Your League remains engaged with federal lawmakers as Congress finds itself facing a partial government shutdown on Friday, absent new action to fund the government.

To prevent a shutdown, the House and Senate must pass a short-term funding extension this week, giving it more time to negotiate and pass appropriations bills to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year. Various media outlets reported that congressional leaders have a short-term funding extension that will set up two new funding deadlines on March 1 and March 8. The Senate could consider the two-tiered continuing resolution tonight, according to Senate leadership.

"While credit unions will step up to aid members in the event of a partial government shutdown, we continue to actively engage with lawmakers in hopes such a scenario can be avoided," said League President/CEO Carrie Hunt. "We've made it clear in all our communication to lawmakers and during recent meetings with our delegation that a shutdown would also pose a significant challenge for our credit unions."

In previous shutdowns, credit unions have offered skip-a-payment options, 0 percent loans, 0 percent lines-of-credit and more to aid members. In fact, we encourage you to forward your plans to the League today so we can share that information with lawmakers, should the shutdown occur.
