Legislative Receptions: Building Relationships for Credit Union Advocacy

10/22/2024

The Virginia Credit Union League’s Legislative Receptions create opportunities for credit union employees to engage with lawmakers in a relaxed, approachable setting. These events, held across key regions in Virginia, are an essential part of the League’s advocacy strategy, fostering direct connections between industry professionals and elected officials.

What Are Legislative Receptions?

Legislative Receptions are relaxed, after-hours events where credit union professionals can meet with state legislators and other public officials. Held in casual settings, such as breweries or credit unions, these gatherings break away from the traditional sit-down dinner model. Instead of formal speeches or presentations, attendees have the chance to engage in open conversation, share their experiences, and build relationships.

“We wanted to make these events accessible to everyone—not just executives—so the format is designed to encourage real conversations, not just formal advocacy,” explains CeJae Vtipilson, Vice President of Political Affairs at the League.

Why These Events Matter for Advocacy

Advocacy is about more than just showing up when legislation is being discussed. Building connections with lawmakers ahead of time helps ensure that when credit unions need support, they already have strong, trusted relationships in place.

“Legislators need to know who we are and what we stand for before we ask for their help on specific issues,” says Vtipilson. “These events are a chance for credit union employees to tell their own stories and show the impact we make on our communities.”

By creating informal, approachable environments, Legislative Receptions give credit union professionals at all levels a comfortable space to connect with legislators. Whether you’re a teller, branch manager, or CEO, your voice and your experiences matter—and these receptions are the perfect place to share them.

Who Should Attend?

Everyone in the credit union industry has a role to play in advocacy. While these events were once primarily attended by executives and board members, the League now encourages all employees, from Emerging Professionals (EPs) to branch staff, to attend.

“Advocacy isn’t just for the leadership team,” says Vtipilson. “We want every credit union employee to feel empowered to participate. Whether you’re new to the industry or have years of experience, your perspective is important, and legislators need to hear it.”

The receptions are an excellent opportunity for first-time attendees to get involved in advocacy in a low-pressure setting. With food, beverages, and plenty of time to mingle, the focus is on building connections rather than giving speeches.

What to Expect at a Reception

Attending a Legislative Reception is a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Instead of formal dinners with rigid seating arrangements, these events offer a more open format where you can move around, meet other credit union professionals, and engage in real conversations with lawmakers.

A member of Congress or another elected official may speak for a few minutes, but the rest of the time is dedicated to informal networking. The atmosphere is professional yet laid-back, making it easy to connect with others.

“It’s a fun and casual evening,” Vtipilson notes. “You’ll get to meet people from across the credit union industry and connect with your legislators in a more approachable environment. Whether you’re new to advocacy or a seasoned advocate, there’s something valuable for everyone.”
