Virginia Credit Union League Champions Community at Cherry Blossom Race
This past weekend, the Virginia Credit Union League (VACUL) staff and credit union volunteers from around the state and country demonstrated their unwavering commitment to community and philanthropy at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Race in Washington, D.C. This distinguished event, which includes a 5K and 10-mile race, isn't just a test of endurance; it's a significant fundraiser for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. In fact, this year’s race raised an incredible $550,000, contributing to the more than $11.5 million donated by credit unions since 2002.
Our League's participation this year was notably highlighted by the enthusiastic efforts of Chief Advocacy Officer JT Blau, Director of Membership and Business Development Katie Bailey, Director of Marketing Jasmine Mines, and Interim President/CEO Karima Freeman, who volunteered at packet pickup among more than 2,000 volunteers to facilitate this grand event. JT also embraced the challenge, participating in both race days, showcasing the spirit of community and determination that fuels us.
"Volunteering at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Race was amazing—it truly showcased how credit unions foster community. Seeing countless runners, united by a shared passion, mirrored the collaborative essence of our credit union community. Distributing bibs felt like contributing to a larger unity and support that defines us. Such moments make me incredibly proud to be part of the Virginia Credit Union League and the broader credit union movement! A special shoutout to JT Blau for his participation; having a teammate in the race brought an added layer of pride to the day,” said Katie.
Additionally, League member Northwest Federal Credit Union (NWFCU) has been an integral part of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Race for many years, showcasing their commitment to community involvement and wellness promotion. This year, NWFCU was honored to sponsor a water spot during the race, a role that involved over fifty dedicated NWFCU volunteers. These volunteers played a crucial role in ensuring the hydration and comfort of the race participants by handing out water along the route.
“Our involvement in the Cherry Blossom Race exemplifies more than just an annual commitment; it reflects our broader mission to make a tangible difference in the communities we serve, embodying the cooperative spirit that defines the credit union movement,” said NWFCU’s President/CEO and VACUL Board Vice Chair Jeff Bentley.
Similarly, Chartway Credit Union, another League member, significantly contributed to this cause. President/CEO Brian Schools, in collaboration with America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle, played a key role in presenting a check to CMN Hospitals, highlighting our collective support for children's healthcare.
We are inspired by the collective effort and deeply grateful for the opportunity to support a future where every child has access to essential healthcare. We look forward to continuing our participation in this meaningful event for years to come. For more details on the race and its mission, please visit https://www.cherryblossom.org.
